Julie and Joel are the sort of couple whose together-ness makes you feel that all is right with the world. It reminds me of the comforting satisfaction you feel when after a long search, you finally find the two puzzle pieces that fit together. They met in law school, and (as I learned from Joel’s best man’s toast at the wedding) Joel didn’t think that at first Julie would be interested in him. At the encouragement of his friend, he pursued her and soon she was introducing me to the new man in her life.
Watching these two together is pure magic. The blending of their two families is magic. It was a long road to find each other, but now that they have, the “meant to be” aspect is hard to deny. The very thought of them makes me smile. Joel is from Kentucky and Julie’s parents moved from India before she was born. In some senses, the tow of them couldn’t be more different, and in another, it’s so obvious how they fit.
I was looking forward to the henna party beforehand and it was just as much fun as I expected. At Julie’s mom’s insistence (ok, it didn’t really take that much convincing!) I got henna done myself before I left and had it on my hands for the wedding. Julie’s sister-in-law performed a dance, Julie’s dad gave a great toast, and little Jack got a cool skull painted on his hand instead of henna.
Their blended ceremony was a hybrid of their backgrounds and Julie’s family had a translator to explain the meaning of the Hindu parts of the ceremony. There was lots of dancing, and, as usual with these two, lots of laughs.
